Tell us about your career journey since you graduated…

After my first class Law degree at Brunel, I completed the LPC and then commenced my training contract. I chose to specialise in commercial property law. I have been working for a local law firm for just over a year and am now just over 3 years post qualified.

What does an average day at work involve for you?

Liaising with clients and third parties. Drafting and negotiating various documents. Supervising secretary and paralegal work. Being involved in the business development of the firm. Helping clients purchase, sell or lease commercial property. Attending meetings. Co-hosting and presenting at the firm's quarterly property club. Various skills are necessary for this role such as excellent communication skills, attention to detail and team work!

What’s been the highlight of your career so far?

I was delighted to be promoted to an Associate after 8 months of working at my new firm. I've been given numerous levels of responsibility, and the opportunity to be involved in business development of the firm, to generate more clients. I've worked for some very high net-worth clients and on large projects.

How would you say Brunel helped you to get where you are today?

The one year placement gave me the opportunity to really consider how I wanted to shape my career. It also brought the academic side to life. As I have said elsewhere, the resources available were good. The experience I gained from my one year placement was invaluable - it was a good time to have a break before the all-important final year!

Why did you choose to study at Brunel and why would you recommend Brunel to others?

Brilliant lecturers - in particular, Professor Abimbola (‘Bimbo’) Olowofoyeku - an excellent mentor! In addition, the one year placement was a good and much needed break from reading and studying. It also gave me the opportunity to seriously consider how I wanted to progress my career after my degree. I made good contacts and developed core legal skills.

What is your best memory of studying here?

Professor Bimbo telling me that my desire to achieve a first class Law degree could come true! I was eager to obtain a first class but it wasn't difficult to lose hope and get lost in the reading material. Professor Bimbo was a brilliant lecturer because his job didn't stop after the seminar or lecture, he was prepared to guide, advise and support students to achieve their full potential.

If you could give one piece of advice to new students, what would that be?

Take the course seriously, seek advice from lecturers and take it on board. Also, be sure to consider your future career during your Law degree, so use the careers services and try to plan ahead. The degree is difficult, but hard work will be rewarded. Brunel has excellent resources in relation to lecturers and books.

What would be your top tip or advice for new graduates as they begin their career journey?

You should try your best to build your CV as much as possible by getting as much work experience and exposure to law firms as possible. Use any time that you have during the summer holiday and half term break to complete short work placements. Also attend careers fairs and other events organised by the careers service and the Law School.
